Leftovers, Listener Feedback & Season One in Review
Y'all. We are so grateful for our Roadies and the community this podcast has given us. After a few episodes apart, Jill and Paula are back together to share some thoughts from YOU, add some thoughts to the topics we have discussed so far, and maybe even disagree a little bit.

The Intersection of Reality Star Josh Duggar, Sexual Abuse & Religious Systems
Marriage and Family Therapist and Trauma expert Carly Ostler joins Paula this week to discuss Reality Star Josh Duggar's recent arrest and history of sexual abuse allegations. We examine the potential experiences of abuse survivors in a religious system such as the Duggar's, as well as have a broader discussion about sexual abuse trauma and healing.

Teenage Mission Trips & the Cost of Evangelism
This week, Jill and guest co-host Andrew discuss the experience of mission trips, toxic charity and the cost of evangelism, specifically related to teenage mission trips. While Paula is working hard to close out her semester, Andrew and Jill share their own experience of mission work as teenagers, the theology behind various mission experiences and offer some hopeful u-turns for those who feel called to respond to Jesus' great commission to "make disciples of all people."

A Conversation about Police Brutality
Join us for this rather impromptu and raw conversation where we struggle and ask questions such as: How can systems of power be held accountable? As followers of Jesus, how do we respond to oppression and injustice? We know that we cannot separate many incidents of police brutality from systemic racism and white supremacy, so where do we start? How can we support our siblings of color?

The Fallout for Followers of Ravi Zacharias
Dan Koch, host of the You Have Permission podcast, joins Jill and Paula for a follow-up conversation about the Ravi Zacharias scandal. Dan and Paula began this discussion on his podcast a few weeks ago, and wanted to continue the conversation here to focus on the impact of the scandal on the followers of Ravi Zacharias. Side roads include discussion of gatekeeping practices for pastors and therapists, the dangers of a capitalistic approach to Christianity, and how much we can separate the message from the messenger.
Religion & Sports:
Paula’s big brother Jamie fills in for Jill this week to guest-host a discussion of the intersection of religion and sports. Discussions include Paula and Jamie's agonies as sports fans, the way sports can seems like a religion with God-like figures, the frustrations of a "sound-bite" and sometimes performative faith culture, and the idea of "winning" and "losing" when it comes to Jesus. And yes, we try to answer the question of if God does indeed care who wins the Super Bowl!
Boundaries:
Why is it so hard for some people to set boundaries? Is "no" a complete sentence? Is it selfish to love yourself as you love your neighbor? (spoiler: nooooooo...not selfish!) Jill and Paula tackle all of these questions plus some discussion on how the sacred can be manipulated to push boundaries. Extra special segment this week in which Paula's dogs push the podcast boundaries!

Christians and “Cancel Culture”
Does "Cancel Culture" exist? Is it the same as "Accountability Culture"? What is the role of the church and Christians? What implications do these cultures have on mental health? Jill and Paula discuss the different ways people get "cancelled" and what it means to hold people accountable while still providing space for growth.

Cross-Over Episode:
Our very own Paula is a guest conversation partner on the You Have Permission podcast with Dan Koch. Together, they discuss Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias and his role in religious abuse.
Racism & the Church
As we continue our conversation on racism and issues of race in the church, we welcome Paula's colleague Emma, who shares a little bit about her journey as a woman of color and a woman of faith. We are so grateful to Emma for joining us!

After taking a moment to give some context to our lengthy hiatus, we do a deep dive into the phenomenon of religious deconstruction: what it is, how it might be approached from a biblical perspective or a mental health perspective, and we wonder together why and how some are threatened by it.
